Materialet som jag kom på spåren under arbetet med Drömmen om San Michele var så rikt att jag föreslog min förläggare på Wahlström & Widstrand Unn Palm att jag skulle skriva en oerdentlig biografi över Munthe. Hon nappade omedelbart på förslaget och gav mig carte blanche beträffande sidantal och till och med ett forskningsanslag för resor, kopiering, bokinköp med mera. Arbetet med denna bok var oerhört stimulerande och berikande för mig, inte minst därför att det var för första gången som jag rörde mig utanför mina vanliga forskningsområden.
